“Stay Six Feet Away!”
Unfortunately, this is one of the many things that the graduating classes of 2020 will remember about this milestone year of their lives. When they were just entering the home stretch of their school journeys, the demands for quarantine made world news, and the schools shut down facing many with “the loss.” The loss of “final” moments with sports seasons, school plays, activities, socials and proms. The loss of goodbyes to teachers and friends and to memories that were yet to be made. These students were, in so many ways, ripped off !
In the wake of this pandemic, I was flooded with calls for senior sessions. Parents and students were frantic to document what they could, not knowing if they would get another chance. As you can image, and while the “unknown” loomed surrounding this virus, I was reluctant to venture out to work. With New Orleans remaining a “hot spot” in the U.S., I had many safety concerns meeting clients. But, then again, when your niece asks, you show up!
Tiffany, like countless other graduates, was and is struggling with “the loss,” but is handling it like a champ. We did some casual cap and gown shots for her mom on school campus and also New Orleans City Park. Yet, she really wanted some for herself. She is a member of the Archbishop Rummel marching band, and always knew that she wanted to have her photos taken with her French Horn at the football stadium of which she played so many games. Unfortunately, due to the shut down, she was unable to get her hands on her uniform, and wasn’t able to gain access to the stadium.
Next stop, French Quarter! It was eerily quiet and empty. Not the famous hustle and bustle that we are used to. Plenty of street parking. No long lines for beignets. No street vendors, no tourists, and no music. That is except for the beautiful sound of Tiff’s horn. What a perfect day to photograph. The sense of humor in this girl! Not only funny and beautiful, but a natural poser. She made light of the situation, of course, and we laughed a lot.
My heart goes out to not only her, but also to another nephew of mine, KJ, in Texas that is in the same boat of graduation loss of his “lasts.” Made me think that this Class of 2020, has been called for something special. They were born amid the terrorist attack of 9/11. They don’t remember the grief and fear that shook the nation, or the unity of community that followed. Their innocence and beautiful arrivals in this world brought peace to their parents and families in an uncertain time. And now, these kids are being called to the same chaos, making them stronger. Hence, inspiring all others around them. Some of these kids may not get to walk the stage, but this isn’t going unnoticed. We see you, Tiffany, and the Class of 2020! You are our future, and it is going to be bright! Good luck in Ruston and we love you!
